With the tremendous volume of water that residents and businesses in Orange County rely on, the city has strict guidelines around water Backflow protection. They cannot risk any backflow water to contaminate the water supply and leave millions of people without safe water. 

Orange County, California is home to over 3 million residents, 320,000 businesses, and some of the most popular tourist destinations on the west coast, including Disneyland! On any given day, there are millions of people who rely on the Orange County Water District to provide clean and safe water to them. 

The Orange County Sanitation District receives approximately 200 million gallons of wastewater per day! Some of the treated wastewater is discharged into the closeby Pacific Ocean, but about 130 million gallons will be sent back to the facilities where it is purified and saved in the reservoir to supply the county.

In accordance with Title 17 of the California Administrative Code – Public Health, and section 209-12.1 of the City of Orange Water Division code, the city will “not provide any water service to any premises unless the public domestic water supply is protected as required by State, County, and City of Orange regulations.” This means that all commercial businesses must closely follow the guidelines in order to retain their business licenses.
